Drifts are used to run through joints of drill pipe to make sure there are no blockages in the joint caused by raised metal, cement, or any other obstruction.
Drifts are usually 2-4 feet and made 1/8-inch smaller than the ID of the tool joints. Drifts can be made from either Teflon or steel. Teflon drifts need to be run in pipe that has internal coating so it does not damage the coating.
